Prepare
Before leaving home, ensure you have a face covering as this is now required on public transport by law. You could also carry hand sanitiser and wipes.
Be mindful of travel times
Travellers are being encouraged to travel off-peak wherever possible and only travel on public transport when absolutely necessary. Check your journey for updated schedules before travelleing.
Pre-book where possible
Rail travellers are encouraged to book online, reserve seats and use contactless payment methods wherever possible.
Face coverings
Face coverings are now mandatory on public transport from entering the departure station to exiting at the other end and on the tube, trams and buses. Find out more in our face masks FAQ post.
Maintain social distancing
Always try to maintain the recommended 2 metres from staff and other passengers.
Do not travel with symptoms
As per government guidelines, you should not travel if you are displaying any COVID-19 symptoms.

RDG Video Update
The Rail Delivery Group has released a travel safety video to provide guidance for passengers on how to help ensure a safer journey.
This runs alongside their Safer Travel Pledge (below) focussed on what train companies can do.
RDG Safer Travel Pledge
The Rail Delivery Group, comprising rail companies from across the country, has created a Safer Travel Pledge. This pledge covers the extra steps taken to protect passengers while increasing service offering through a return to fuller schedules. It comprises 8 key ways train companies can ensure safety along in addition to the steps passengers can take to support this (video above):
- More trains and extra carriages in timetables
- New social distancing signs
- Powerful fog cleaning on trains
- Soap restocked more often in stations and on trains
- Vending machines for face coverings and hand sanitiser
- Hand sanitiser points in over 300 stations
- New service on Messenger app alerting people to busy trains
- Up to 2,500 extra staff available at key locations
